Hello all. I am trying to help out a friend with his Mototrans Ducati 160. It is about a 1966 year model. I have fitted new ignition contacts and condencer, but need to know what the timing should be. Thought of setting to 21 degrees btdc as listed for the Italian 160s but am not able to turn the contact backplate any further than about 15 degrees btdc before it comes to the limit of the adjustment, which makes me think it must be a different setting for the Spanish motors. Are any of you able to tell me the correct settings please.

Hi, I had a quick look at Mick walkers book. For the 160 Turismo and 160 sport he gives 12degrees static and 39 degrees fully advanced.
I’ll try and attach a photo….. cheers Dave

Hi Jeb
Is the points gap set correctly? This will affect when the points open. It's possible to gain a little more advance with the points gap set on the small side.
I have had an issue where the fibre heel on the moving points part is too long; if you can shorten that while still being able to get the points gap, that might be enough.
If none of that works, then move the points cam driving pinion one tooth, i.e. deliberately misalign it with the oil pump pinion by one tooth.
Hope this helps

Thanks Dave, that is just what I needed. Will give it a go at 12 degrees.

Dave, thank you for the kind offer. Would your book give wiring diagram for the 1966 Mototrans 160 by any chance ? It bears very little resemblance to any of the Italian models from my Manuel.

If you look down the headings on this discussion section Timp posed a question headed Engine Identification.
I have posted a couple of Mototrans wiring diagrams for a 125 and a 250 on there.
The 160 should be very similar to one of those wiring diagrams.
I may have an actual 160 diagram, but I can't access it for a few days. If it's much different I will post a copy on here.

Thanks Jon. I have a diagram for a Mototrans 250 Road model which I own, and a copy of the 125 diagram, from this forum, but they both seem very different from the 160. Different wire colours, switches etc.

Please ignore the above Jon. I have now looked at the diagrams you suggested as sent to Timp, and the 250 diagram looks to be very similar to the 160, colours, switches etc. So, thank you very much.
