What was he trying to do?

Bought a narrowcast Mark 3 tank years ago. Finally got around to cleaning it up, but what was someone trying to do? Most of the welding looks okay, including where the carb goes.

Was he making the indent/cut away to fit an SS carb as Mach 1 ?

I can't make out what the issue is...Need to see more of the tank I think.

The issue is the state of the welding along the seam on the bottom of the tank. This is what I show in the photos.

The cutout for the carb looks perfect - factory done.

There are some small holes that have been brazed, but nothing like the welding.

I took some more photos to try to show the seam better (including the carb cutout)

I think the poor welding was done by a previous owner, but I don't know what he was trying to do. This is over about 8 inches on both bottom seams

Ok, so I see what you mean more clearly now. I have done exactly this on a number of occasions (hopefully a bit better looking) the bottom edge is where any water in the fuel or maybe latterly in an abandoned tank left out side gathers and then rots out the weld seam (or also the very bottom of the tank hence the brazing) if the rot is not too bad you can simply re melt the edge of the seam together (with a touch of filler rod) using an oxy-acetylene welding torch, works almost perfectly (if you are quick with the torch ;) ) no distortion and just a little paint loss.
Cheers,
George
