chain joining link won't fit: time for new chain?

Postby cooperplace » Fri Feb 24, 2023 6:05 am

My 900S2 (I know, it's like 2 singles) has an o-ring chain, it was on it when I bought it, that looks to be in good condition, no stretch at all for example. I had to break it for engine removal and refit, so i bought a joining link, correct size, 530. But the joining link won't fit in. Is this time for a new chain? Or is it OK to press in a joining link?

Advice from the wise much appreciated.

Sorry for a V-twin Q but the quality of advice here is so much better.

We need more info! Why will the link not fit? Are the pins too large? Are you sure that it is the correct link? It should slide straight in......

I don't know why it won't fit. It is the correct -according to label- new pin. Yes it should slide in, but it doesn't.

I doubt that you need a new chain.

Hi, my advice is to measure the pitch of the chain ( between centres of the pins ) and the pitch of the link…. If they are the same then check the pin diameter. If that’s the same, it may need a bit of pressure using a chain tool ( or small clamp ) make sure the new link is free to rotate.

Good luck

Do you have a set of calipers (or a micrometer) to do a comparison measurement of the pin diameters, new link vs. old?

'Cos at the end of the day, that's all that matters, regardless of what the label on the packet might say ...

yes I do. That's a very good idea, thank you.
Why didn't I think of that? Must be getting old-timers disease.

Turns out there's a ten thou difference in pin diameter. Definitely time for a new chain.
