Friction Damper

I thought it was odd that my 350 Scrambler did not have a friction damper. The chrome nut at the top of the steering stem has a hole but the stem itself has no hole for the rod to go through. Most singles I've seen have a damper. Is this something common to Scramblers?

The steering stem has no provision for the rod to pass through. Maybe I should take a picture of the bottom of the lower triple clamp.

Here's a top pix without the crown nut that has a hole in it.

It has the same loose balls in the cup at top and bottom of the frame neck. They are tightened down by the flat nut shown in the pix.

could the original tube been damaged and someone replaced it with the solid steel rod? It certainly looks strong!

speaking of friction dampers, what are the friction washers made of? Mine no longer offer any friction.

I would like to know this too. It kinda resembles a linen phenolic.
