Friction Damper

Postby frankfast » Mon Sep 20, 2010 11:43 pm

I thought it was odd that my 350 Scrambler did not have a friction damper. The chrome nut at the top of the steering stem has a hole but the stem itself has no hole for the rod to go through. Most singles I've seen have a damper. Is this something common to Scramblers?

My 350 Scrambler does have the friction damper, and it is shown in my parts book for the 350 Scrambler too.
Somebody deemed it unnecessary in the past and removed it perhaps??

The steering stem has no provision for the rod to pass through. Maybe I should take a picture of the bottom of the lower triple clamp.

Just re-read your first post. Wow, that sounds a bit unusual. So the ends, or at least one of the ends, of your steering stem are sealed off? Picture please :)

Here's a top pix without the crown nut that has a hole in it.

Ok, looks like it is homemade bar stock, instead of tube. So how do your steering head bearings work? The tube has threaded portions top and bottom to tighten up the inner race. You don't have taper bearings hiding in there somewhere do you?

It has the same loose balls in the cup at top and bottom of the frame neck. They are tightened down by the flat nut shown in the pix.

could the original tube been damaged and someone replaced it with the solid steel rod? It certainly looks strong!

speaking of friction dampers, what are the friction washers made of? Mine no longer offer any friction.
