Cam support block

Does anybody here know if it's possible to remove and replace the cam support block (as shown in the pic) without doing anything else i.e. can I just pull it out, replace the bearing and put it back in or do things collapse inside? And do I then need to re-shim?

Yes, this is possible, if you adjust the piston in the compression TDC position. The rockers now should have their usual free play, no forces remainung on the camshaft.
Re-shimming the valve clearances can be expected to stay constant after reassembling the block. But should be checked anyhow. You never know ...

Ian, I found it not easy to remove the cam block. After loosen the four cylinder studs and gently tapping the cam block with a mallet it was possible to pull it out. Do not use brute force.

Hi, if you remove the top bevel cover you can use a steel rod placed through the camshaft to tap the bearing support block out…. Gently….

If you tap the block at the corners with a rubber mallet it will rotate and loosen. It will also expose the inner side of the block at the corners which can be tapped with an aluminum punch or drift to remove.

True, as long as the camshaft doesn't have a roll-pin or other oil flow restrictor in the end.
I have actually managed to go a step further and change the camshaft in my 175 without taking the head off.

The method I have used for years for a "stuck" cam support block .......set piston at tdc on the compression stroke, remove tacho drive cover use a rattle gun to remove the top bevel retaining nut, then gently tap the cam towards the cam block support, it will dislodge it, but you can only tap the cam through about max 3mm to insure the rockers all stay in contact with the cam lobes. Done carefully this will work.
