250 Silentium

Postby nalimugmug » Mon Jun 20, 2022 8:08 pm

Hi,

I've just acquired a genuine Silentium silencer complete, it's a bit on the rough side but is very solid and ought to restore to an acceptable standard.

I'm having problems getting the end cone off, it looks like somebody has assembled it with a jointing compound of sorts.

With these items being on the rare side, I'm reluctant to get it apart using brute force and causing some damage.

Any ideas please.

Thanks

Bob

perhaps a heat gun directed on the cone will expand it. Of course, I would watch closely to make sure the chrome is not being damaged unless you plan to re-chrome it anyway.

A shot or aerokroil into the junction every now and then during the process might help too.

Probably too much of a PITA would be to freeze the muffler portion ahead of or during heating the cone. You could plug the header entry end to keep the water out of the muffler internals and put the header in an ice chest leaving the cone end out while you heat it with heat gun.

I'm just 'spit-balling' here... others are likely to come up with something better.

I know what you mean about the SIlentiums though. Repros are available but they don't have that beautiful logo engraved in them.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your advice.

Not knowing what aerokroil was, I'm in the UK- I looked on the web, something similar and already in my garage was plusgas, may not be as good, but I tried that, along with a propane torch, after about half a dozen attempts cone still wouldn't budge. Part of the problem is getting a good grip of the parts, as to state the obvious they are hollow, so the only place to secure the silencer was by using the mounting tag in a bench vice.

Six hours later, cone is off.

I mounted the silencer vertical and used an over the counter drain cleaner which is 91% sulphuric acid to burn out the sealant, a very time-consuming job. After each application of the acid using a medical syringe, I gently opened up the gap with a screwdriver. Lurking in the sealant were what appeared to be asbestos or similar o rings, there were three in total.

I had to lessen the flare on the removed cone by using the jaws of an adjustable spanner to enable the joining band to fit.

Not sure why this drain cleaner is readily available to the public, it's lethal stuff, I donned rubber gloves, glasses and kept well covered.

So it's off to the platers tomorrow, ill sit down for the price-wont be cheap.

This silencer is going on 521D,the eagle eyed will notice that what's installed along with the seat at the moment is incorrect

Take care

Bob

Four Mach 1's?

What a beautiful sight!

It's difficult to find one, much less four.

One day in about 1976 I was on a long country ride on my silentium-fitted 450, trying to keep up with a kawasaki triple, could only manage about 95mph. Suddenly the tail cone popped off and top speed leapt up, had no problem keeping up. No idea what happened to the tail cone.
be nice, I'm not very bright.
