After about 12 months break I got back to work on the Vento, hoping to start it, but my fuel connections leak. I got some fancy clear green 7mm hose, made in Italy, and I tried s/steel hose worm drive clamps, but they leak, no matter how tight I do them up, or even if they're not so tight. I bought an assortment of "fuel hose spring clips" but the 8mm size don't quite fit over the hose when it's pushed onto the tank's fuel cock, and the 10mm are too loose. Really heavy duty Gates brand black hose (4mm thick walls) works perfectly with no clamp of any sort, but it's ugly and not being clear is an issue.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom re fuel hose? And clamps?

Also, is there a consensus on in-line filters? With my tank being ancient they seem a good idea, but it's an extra 4 connection points to leak.

I have the green clear hose on my bikes......no problems...... but I never use worm drive hose clips, I always use the little stainless steel wrap round type clips with the single screw that tightens them up, get them on the dreaded Ebay.

Your problem is not the hose clip, but the hose.

Here's what my Vento uses: a simple wire clip. But the hose itself is a good, tight, push-fit on the barb of the tap (so tight that when the hose is old like here, to get it off/on, you need to warm it up with a hair dryer).

Check the hose. Not all "7mm hoses" are a tight push fit.

I am using 'Tygon' fuel tube/hose. It's used on lawn mowers, strimmers and RC models for fuel lines and is compatible with up to 10% ethanol fuel.

Put "tygon fuel tube" into eBay or else go and speak to your local lawn machinery or chainsaw dealer who stocks Honda or 'Oregon' service spares.

Lots of "fuel hose" is nitrile rubber and will not withstand 10% efuel and if you want to view the fuel level/flow then the old clear fuel hose hardens within 3 months and cracks after 12 months, as does nitrile hose. 'Viton' fuel hose is the only rubber fuel hose that will withstand 10% ethanol fuel, but you cannot view the fuel as it is black.

I have Yamaha SRX600 machines and the fuel tap that actually shuts off the fuel lives in the middle of the base of the fuel tank, above the cylinder head! I have replaced all the fuel pipes on both SRX600 machines and my '74 Ducati 450 MKIII with 'Tygon' and had no problems to date. Warm the end of the tube in hot water and push it over the fuel tap spigot, it shrinks and forms a very tight fit that doesn't leak. You could use a twist of s/s safety wire to ensure it stays leak free, or use "spring hose clips", or "stainless steel fuel hose clips". Put either of the " " groups of words into eBay to see what I mean.

As for fuel filters, in my experience the clear, hard, square/oblong plastic type go cloudy and crisp within 6 months of exposure to 10% ethanol fuel. The internal filter also becomes detached from the filter body and the two pieces of filter de-laminate from each other. Fuel flow is reduced, there is no effective filtering and the spigots snap or crack and weep fuel. No amount of tightening will stop the leak.

Again small opaque round filters made by Oregon or Honda for their lawn mowers or ride-on mowers are the best. They have a reputation to maintain, whereas the Chinese already have theirs!

Yes, I'm sure the issue is the hose, not the clips. I got some of the clips as shown by Graeme, but there's still a leak. I'm now on the hunt for some decent clear fuel hose. 10% ethanol is not an issue because here we can get fuel without it, so I don't use it.

You might enjoy the weather here today: it's 37C. I'm in Adelaide, on the south coast of Australia, in the middle.

Peter, the green hose comes in a few sizes.
I use it on my singles without hose clamps, I’ve never had a leak.
It does go hard after a while and does shrink so be sure to leave it a little longer than needed.
What size is the tap spigot? What size is the carb spigot?
