Electrex CDI/Alternator Systems

I'm presently helping a friend with the resurrection of his 250w/c SCR. We experienced a very weak spark coming from the DUCATI CDI. As the Logitron R-R is also dead and the old battery as well, we decided to replace the original CDI/alternator system with a modern Electrex 12Volt version.
Browsing the Electrex web page I realized that 2 different systems are offered:
STK-163-69 https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=stk%2d163%20%2d69&PN=STK%2d163%2d69%2ehtml#SID=1173 and
STK-164 https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/STK-164.html#SID=1173
STK-163 seems to need the battery to work properly, and has CDI and coil units separated. STK-164 has it's own supply winding on the alternator stator, so needs no battery, and has a combo CDI/coil box, like the original DUCATI device.
We are not shure which one we should choose. My idea is to stay with a batteryless system, like an old magneto - the bike still can be started with a low-chargeed battery, or even without any.
So, has anybody of you guys good recommendationsfor concerning this decision, or at least some more informations about other differences?
Hans
