Paul Smart RIP

Paul was killed in a road accident a few days ago. It appears he was riding a modern Ducati Northwards on the A21 near Flimwell and was in collision with a car. Paul was one of my heroes and will be much missed . I am saddened that I will never get to meet him . To my mind his greatest Victory was not the 750 Imola but the almost unknown class win of the 67 Barcelona 24 hr endurance race on a road registered 250 Narrowcase Mk 3 he shared with Reg Everett. Paul was a tiger and not to be defeated . My heartfelt condolences go out to his familly.

Very sad news, he was a great ambassador for the sport, I did have the pleasure of shaking his hand at a Brands meeting, R.I.P Paul.

I am really sad to read this. I know that Paul had a Ducati Paul Smart Replica that he rode on the road, and he was still very active in classic bike circles. What a sad way to go. I recently heard of someone else dying in a bike accident - Michael Runnicles, who was a Ducati mechanic who was very active on Ducati forums and who was a great help to owners who needed advice. Apparently he was on holiday in France and was run down by a drunk driver.

Whenever I hear news like this it brings home how dangerous motorcycling is. RIP to both of them.

I was out at the same time and in the same areas as Paul but was with a bunch of old Norton club boys riding Nortons. Paul has a a restored Dommie so he could have been out pottering with us. Much safer as a group, no one takes liberties or " did not see you ". I doubt he would have been happy at our pace though . Gone but not forgotten.

I suppose that the only comfort we can possibly take is that he obviously still loved riding and working on motorcycles.
