160TS Mototrans Carburettor jets and needle sizes

Postby useless dog » Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:14 pm

Dear friends,
I am wanting to sort out my carburettor (AMAL) but I would like to know what the correct jet and needle sizes are. As I imported the bike from Spain I cannot guarantee that the one fitted is correct to factory spec so would like to return to the factory settings before making any changes.
Can anyone tell me what I need?
Thank you.

Hi U/D,
I'm not sure if this will help you, but the Amal carburettor on my Mototrans 250 Scrambler is stamped 627 / 419, which can be cross-referenced to the BURLEN website to find all the original jet and needle specs, and which bike / model it was originally fitted to. Your Amal carb should have a similar size & model stamp.

I hope the picture is legible.

Al.

Main jet for the 20mm Amal is 85 or 95 or even 100, depending on which parts list you look at or what camshaft is fitted.
Pilot jet is probably best at 15
Needle jet should be 105
I think there's only one needle available for a small 4-stroke Monobloc.
Not sure about the slide, probably a 3 or 3 1/2 cutaway.

Aye Jon,

Just to clarify, this is the website link that you require for AMAL carb specifications: AMAL_carb_co_uk

I have had a look at the website and your specific 160TS Motrans motorcycle is not listed. But, by identifying the specific carburettor model from the numbers stamped on the main body of the carburettor, you should be able to establish a basic setup specification.

In the back of the 2019 published paper AMAL catalogue there is a list of motorcycles and the OME carburettor fitted. Under the 'Ducati Motrans' heading there are more models covered than on the AMAL website, but these do not include the 160TS model and also some specific tuning variations for the 250cc models.

Good health, Bill
