Bewst workshop manual for 1964 250 Mark 3

Hi everyone.

Newbie here, Dave.

I've just bought a basket case 250 - a couple of frames, wheels and most of an engine - DM250 88163. It would appear to be a 1964/1965, 4/5 speed Mark 111? (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2506).

Plan is to put it on the track. I may look at building a road version using the second frame but that is sometime in the future.

What is the best workshop manual to get? I've searched the forum but can't find anything, so I was thinking of buying a manual. It appears the Haynes manual runs from 1969 onwards. Other options seem to be the original workshop manual, or the Tom Bailey manual?

Any recommendations/sources etc?

A manual was produced by Clymer in USA, which is a reprint of a Ducati factory manual for narrow case singles.

As for the manual, a copy of the 'Clymer Publications, Ducati, service, repair, handbook, 160,250, 350, 450, through 1974 could be the best to get. It was published in July 1974, reprinted in 1975 and again in 1980. The first two prints have no ISBN code, but the 1980 print has the following two codes:-

ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0892870044

ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0892870042

You don't say where you live, but Amazon or Abe Books often have copies for sale, as does eBay. Prices are around £18-00 + P&P for a new copy (US$25).

However, do not dismiss the Haynes manual either, many of the images of maintanence/assemblies are very useful; but some of the data are incorrect! The Haynes manual is focused more toward the 'widecase' models than the narrowcase that I believe are the models that you have.

The Clymer Publications Manual of which the front page is depicted here is not bad, but a mix compiled from the original works manual, some user manuals etc. It even contains informations for the later w/c models. It has a large chapter dealing with AMAL concentric carbs rarely used on singles of the period in question, a single page only for the Dell'Orto VHB, and nothing about the older SS1 etc. It can be found for (legal?) download somewhere in the web. I can send a .pdf via email, if requested.

If you can read French, this manual is also recommended. It is focussed on the early wide case models, but also has information and data for some narrow case bikes. I don't know if it is still in print, but I have seen scanned pdfs for download on the web.

It’s a long shot, but I found an original factory narrow case manual on Amazon a couple months ago when I bought my barn find ‘66 Scrambler With the fragile binding and all. $35 shipped. I know I got lucky but you never know.
