widecase single gear lever spline size?

Postby Scottish888 » Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:57 am

Hi folks,
I want to know the gear lever spline size and how it is measured.
Is it the distance between spline peaks or bottoms?
It looks like it could be in the range of 13.5 or 14.5mm.
I heard that any Ducati gear lever will do but most ebay used units are shorty connectors for a links rather than an old style single gear lever.

The serrations are light duty splines.
Some info online, like here:

Thanks for the info, it has a lot of good engineering information.
I can see how they measure an effective size but I don't think retailers use that.
There are a few gear levers online stating 14mm spline whiltst the majority are 10 and 11 mm.

Hi Alex,

I was in the same boat when looking for a gear lever. Any splined lever that fits a modern Ducati will fit the Singles splines, but the problem is that all modern Ducatis have rearset gear levers, so they are no good. There are cheap Chinese ones that fit, made to be fitted as reverse gear levers on Ducatis; I bought one from eBay for about £11, but it is not very good and will not tighten up properly as it is so narrow. I got lucky and found a used billet lever made by one of the flash Italian tuning companies that retails for about £60.

Keep your eye on eBay for Ducati reversed gear levers, lots of people fit these in place of the standard linkage, and you may find one cheap. The Chinese ones will get you out of trouble, but are really only suitable as a stop-gap.

A couple of ideas, as availability may never improve.

- Find any lever that will fit and modify it.

- Don't worry about splines, make a lever from aluminium that can bite into the steel serrations when tightened.

I thought I found a solution when I sourced some universal spline blocks for welding up a custom made lever but the biggest was 13.5mm, still too small.
Does anybody know the Ducati spline size?
I think a 14mm alloy lever could be fitted as Jordan suggested.
Another idea may be using a kickstart lever as these have larger splines then cut and weld that up, knowing a spline size would help there :)
In the meantime I have fabricated a lever to bolt onto the splined lever from the rear sets as I want to keep that useable.

This could be a cheap option to modify.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/164140782968

It's an 860GT brake pedal, that has the same spline as our gear change levers.

Hi Jordan, that's a good tip for future reference didn't know about that one ;)
Cheers,
