66 250 Monza under construction

Postby Davescycles72 » Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:35 pm

Hello all. I bought the 250 disassembled, about 3 months ago. A gentleman had taken it to a guy I know to restore. He tore it all down, and paired the black parts about 6 years ago,and decided he didn’t want to do it. It was almost complete, I’m sure you have all heard “ it’s all there”.

Anyway, I had the frame parts painted, and started assembly as the engine had good compression, and I would be taking the engine covers off to polish and reclutch. Checked everything, and decided to hot wire it and check engine, after oil change, new points and condenser, and carb. I kicked my brains out, and got it to run but wouldn’t rev up.

The alternator checks good, plenty of magnetism to flywheel. Book said 0degrees for Monza, 5-8 degrees advance on the ignition side. I could never achieve that. So I pulled the timing cover ( needed a new seal anyway). Put it on tdc on compression, and set the timing marks dot to dot.

Waiting on parts now, but something doesn’t seem right as valve timing is way off from the book. Says intake start to open at 20 degrees, more like 90. Well enough of my problems, thanks for having me.

Monza usually had the battery system so as long as its charged up the bike charging system should not affect starting. Points should start to break just before TDC as a rough guide to static timing. Almost always loose the ignition timing if you remove points cover ! .Remove gear from cover so you can see to set it up. Cam timing dots hard to see ,easy to get wrong , harder to get right!. Bear in mind dots do NOT line up every few revolutions Due to "hunting" tooth design. Takes more revolutions possibly 6 ??

Thank you for the drawing, and input, I didn’t remove the head but the piston looks to good to be original so someone has in the past. I put the engine at TDC compression and put the timing marks dot to dot as pictured, also bevel gear top and bottom. The bike had a scrambler rear sprocket attached when I got it. I was afraid it possibly had a cam for that bike also. Cam appears to have white paint on the cam casting area. Is that correct for Monza? My pic files are to large to show but they are aligned. I’ll let you know what happens when I try to start it again. Thanks. I need to resize pics.

Irfanview is a good free program to quickly resize photos.

You could use an online image shrinker, such as:

Another thrifty way is to send the picture to yourself in email and it will ask you to select size. Choose smallest. Then save.
