Crankshaft missing shim?

Postby Dodge » Wed Apr 21, 2021 1:14 pm

Reassembling my Mk3 Widecase. Should there be a shim between the end of the main crankshaft (alternator side) and the bearing in the crankcase cover? There is one (#0150 29 050) on the kickstart shaft but I don't find one on the main crank. The parts manual does not show it but it might fall between two diagrams.

Are you talking about a shim between the flywheel and main bearing? Usually there will be shims fitted.

No, between the bearing in the cover and the end of crankshaft.

No shim needed there.

Thanks, just seemed strange that there should be one on the kickstart shaft (relatively not much rotation) and not one on the crankshaft that is rotating all the time the engine is running.

The shim on the kickstart shaft is there to control excess end float and to stop any wear on the inside of the clutch cover case, the crankshaft endfloat is controlled by shims on the crank mainshafts inboard of the main bearings in the crankcase, so the crank doesn't need shims out at the clutch cover outrigger bearing.
Cheers,
George
