I would like to check the accuracy of my orriginal 66 tach. particularly in the higher rev range. The previous owner wanted to swap the tach for another that he said was accurate and intimated that the tach on my bike was over-reading by 1000 rpm. After some of the other porkies he told me I am convinced he wanted to offload the poor one and keep the best for his racer!. Now I am looking for a simple shade tree dodge to test the tach. No way would I entrust a working Classic Veglia to the post or a repairman.

Just remembered I have an ancient mains Tacho-strobe with some sort of optical scale for revs , Made by Gunson. Just need to find it.

Could you not scrounge the loan of low tension (points /coil triggered) electronic tach of someone to compare?

Hi George, There is a tach on the 860 bevel, but I think it may be a cable system 1976??. Now where is that bike??.

Some, but not all 1973 750 GT had a Veglia electric(tronic) tacho. Mine does. Not known for being reliable. I think all other twins were mechanical.

Maybe one of the cheap strobe/tachos on ebay can help?
It has to be aimed at a spinning part, perhaps the crank timing tool or the points/pickup rotor.

A laser tacho off ebay is the way to go. Very inexpensive and quite accurate. Put a degree plate on your crankshaft, stick a piece of reflective tape on it to aim the laser at and you will have your answer.

I fitted a 9,000 RPM 4-1 Smiths Chronometric. I checked it using my hand held Smiths rev counter, off the end of the crank.
It's a pity you are not closer to Norwich Bob.

Hi Brian, Its a shame that there is not an occasional get together of Ducati scrubers . I got to meet a few like minded Ducati Guys while at the IOM Classic TT which I did for 4 years running with the 250 . It did 40 days running round the Island and about the same number of laps at Jurby , No real issues apart from dodgy wiring and a perforated carb rubber. I do get to Norwich as I have 2 sets of relatives there. I once rode a full house Clubman DBD34 at 7000 rpm in 2nd thro Sydenham High St so I understand the attraction..
