Ive started work on the Vento, and there will be lots of times I'll be grateful for advice. First question: how do I dismantle the rear Telesco shocks? I want to re-chrome the springs.
Second Q: compression is a bit down (it's easier to kick than my 250) so I'm thinking of lifting the head and doing valves and rings. Any thoughts?
Third q: does anyone have a recommendation for a chain?

I'd definitely have a look at the valves, but I wouldn't take off the barrel without good reason, as the rings will be disturbed which will mean that they will not seal properly. Once the head is off you can turn over the engine and have a look at the bore and see what condition it is in.

The original Telesco Hydrabag shock absorbers can be re-built.
Some of the later Telesco shocks are not really re-buildable, although the springs should come off .
There are two types of retaining clip on the top of the Hydrabag shocks.
One is a one piece clip and the other has two collets, very much like the old Girlings or Hagon shocks.
Remove that clip/clips and the springs will come off.

Do I just use a spring compressor to get the springs out of the way? This is all new to me.

Edit: the other question is whether I can rebuild these myself? A quick google suggested a new pair of Ikon shocks are far cheaper than rebuilding. Mine are Telesco Hydrabag.

If you are not worried about originality, it will be much easier and cheaper to buy new shocks.

How do I remove the rear brake cylinder without cutting or bending the mounting bracket? I can't see how they got the darn thing in there in the first place.

If you have the standard gearing with a 13T front sprocket and a 38T rear you need a 530 chain with 100 links.
The rear master cylinder should come off by removing the two bolts.
The top bolt screws right through the master cylinder and threads back into the frame.
The bottom bolt is also the pivot for the operating lever which needs to be removed at the same time.

Thank you as always for your help. One of the bolts comes straight out. The other isn't a bolt, it's a weird stud, male at each end, 13mm nut on one end, 10mm the other, and it has a nut in the middle (that only goes a few turns) that stops it coming out. Photos attached. I can possible break it off and then replace with a proper bolt. I can't see any other way.

That stud is the pivot; will it not push out back towards the swinging arm with the master cylinder?
