plug wire

Postby MotoMike » Sat Aug 14, 2010 3:37 am

Any issues running modern plug wire on the 6 volt point ignition? I know the old wire is , well wire and has very low resistance allowing all the current to get to the plug. the modern stuff is not strictly wire, more like string impregnated with compounds of resistive particles to limit current and reduce radio interferance. so have any of you used the modern wires on the old 6 volt systems?
thanks in advance
Mike

" Any issues running modern plug wire on the 6 volt point ignition? "

____ There should be no issues with the use of a short length of such. _ That the old-systems are "6-volt", is actually irrelevant ! - (Since it's only the secondary-winding within the ign.coil that's in contention.)
The newer carbon-conductor / 'resistance' spark-plug cable-leads do work with our 6v-DC ign.systems, however are better suited for use with plug-gaps that are larger than Ducati originally recommended. _ So to make sure that the plug-gap still gets most of the voltage-drop, you ought to experiment with larger gaps, starting at .030" . _ But I'm also thinking that there's a chance that those OLD-original ign.coils may not deal well with all the extra external-resistance, and then more likely develop internal-leaks.
__ Compared to standard copper-wire s.p.cable, that newer type of resistance-conductor s.p.cable offers high-resistance which helps to keep the building power-juice from getting bled-down due to any power-juice leakage caused by conductive-contaminates which have built-up on a used spark-plug. _ When such a slightly fouled s.plug lets building power-juice leak-down, then there will then be less voltage built-up & left for a good spark,, and the newer-type resistance s.p.wire cuts-down such leakage, so that there's then more likely sufficient power-juice left for a good-spark (despite a fouled s.plug) ! _ So the newer carbon-conductor/resistance s.p.cabling would be best for use with engines which are experiencing s.plug fouling troubles. _ But I'd then suggest also using a newer/modern ign.coil to go with.
__ If you're one who wishes to use only an original ign.coil and maintain an original ign.system, then ya may as well stick with a wire-type s.p.cable, (which may allow some voltage bleed-off with a USED s.plug), that'll not increase voltage-pressure on the internal-windings of an original ign.coil.
I believe that if ya had a NEW stock-type ign.coil, it would cope well enough with the resistive-type s.p.cable & slightly larger spark-gap. _ But an old-original stock-type ign.coil may not cope too well with a long-length of the resistance-type s.p.cable in combo with an extra large plug-gap -(like is intended with the use of that newer type s.p.cable).
____ Please let us know what you end-up doing.

Thanks Bob
I appreciate your indepth response. I am not wanting to go to the new stuff for any reason than it is easier to get now adays in fact I have some Accell repair wire that is left over from my automotive hot rodding days that I have caps and connectors to make a new wire. Some how in the past 15 years of idle dust collecting, the cap to the original wire has disappeared. Living in the boondocks as I do, there are no moto super stores near by. I guess I should check with the lawn mower repair guys. they probably have the old stuff. Thanks for the food for thought. I am towards lighting the fire in the next few days.

Mike
