I don't know....0603. 16 055 is shown on the parts book, but it is not clear whether it goes on the inside or outside of the gearbox bearing. Hopefully somebody who knows will tell us.

The 0603.16.055 shim is the 2mm shim that is found on the ends of both input and output shafts on the 5 speed models and sits directly against the case bearings inside the gearbox (it is item 30 on the diagram posted). It is the shim that positions either shaft relative to the cases and each other.

There is another thin 0.5mm shim that originally sits in the casing behind the bearing, it has a large O/D and is trapped in the housing. This shim sits between the bearing inner and sprocket back face. It is part of the original thrower system and can be left out if you use a sealed 2RS bearing.

And not helped by the parts 'grouping' not perhaps being what you might expect .

That particular shim (0400.29.210) is actually shown on the crankcase drawing (Section KA), along with the bearing. (And even so, an 'Innocent Observer' might well think it went inside the case .. )

Here, n/c 250; but w/c is the same.

The thin disc (0400.49.210) does go inside the case, just as shown in the diagram. It sits in a slight recess behind the bearing, spinning with the inner race as an oil slinger. Wayward lubricant is flung off, then drains back to the sump via a small notch at the bottom of the bearing recess. I've always considered it an elegant design. Sealed bearings make it optional now, but I still like it.
