Ducati lockdown quiz

Hi

A quick quiz for bored or busy owners;

1) Do you live near Stroud in Glos?

2) Do you have a hairpin valve compressor?

3) Would you be willing to lend it to me?

Correct answers are (surprisingly);
Yes
Yes
and Yes

I would be very grateful if any one could lend me a spring compressor.
The springs are a lot easier to get off than put back on :) .

I can see they are for sale in the States, but £140 + £45 p&p..... :shock:

I may have to try to make one.

TIA

Hi,

In case this helps, I use a standard valve spring compressor on hairpin springs. It may not be perfect, but does the job.

If you use approx 1.5 mm steel wire twisted with a pair of pliers you can pull the loops of the springs close enough together to get the saddle on and then if you have a standard screw type valve spring compressor grind the ends down a little to fit the saddle profile and that will get you sorted .....I used that method for nearly 30 years before I was lucky enough to get the "proper" Ducati tool cheap at a car boot sale!! :o
Stay well,
Cheers,
George

Can you weld? This past weekend I welded up a forked tool to compress the springs and change out my exhaust shim. I think it cost me $12 and I have spare bar left over. I dont weld very well so it took me about 2 hours but came out pretty good and worked even better than it looks.
Heres a link to my google album that I cant seem to pull a pic off and share it with you guys.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them.
I can’t use the standard spring compressor to start off, there’s too much gap between the springs.
The wire could be an option, though.

Thanks

I fabricated a tool like the one shown in the link in the post above and it worked a treat.
