I decided to bite the bullet and pull the swinging arm apart. The bushes have 12 thou of wear in them, and the shaft about 1 thou, BUT, the shaft is pitted and has probably just ground the bushes away. I have contacted a guy on the 'net who makes bushes to see if he can help. I don't think trying to fit bushes of 32mm into housings of 33.5mm is going to work, and neither is bronze bushes without some system of being able to oil them.
Assuming I can get some bushes made, do I polish out the roughness on the pin, or get it hard-chromed and ground?
To please me even more, when I took out the bolt at the front of the chainguard, instead of it undoing, it simply turned, and when I investigated, found that the thread is an insert, pressed into a hole in the swinging arm bracket, and I now have to find someone to weld it back in place.
