160 Sprocket

Postby a_kress » Tue Aug 27, 2019 4:52 pm

Bought a rear wheel off ebay a few years ago to go on my little 250 and I'm just now looking for a sprocket. I'm having one hell of a time finding one of these. The wheel was sold as a 160 monza wheel and I'm not 100% sure it is a monza wheel.

The sprocket LOOKS like it's of an Aermacchi but the Aerm sprocket is smaller.

Does anyone have any idea where I can buy one for a 428 chain. Or should I just toss the wheel in the canal and look for a 250 wheel.

Thanks!

Same as mine on 175 I think. Does it have 4 rubber pieces that the pins push into in the hub?
Mine was OK but in UK there are places that will put a new ring of teeth onto an old centre.
I think same type was used on other small Italian bikes, at least I’ve seen on Guzzis.

The cush drive is one solid piece. It's pretty beat up as well. I've seen some that look like replacements that are four separate pieces.

A new ring of teeth would be cool but this one is not flat and would need a good hammering.

I thought it may be a Grimeca hub but I'm not sure. And my google fu is running pretty dry.

Here's my 175TS hub during stripdown. Inside of brake drum is 136mm - it's shown in the workshop manual as fitted to some earlier bikes up to 175cc.
Presumably bought-in but I don't know where from. I have a photo a the little Guzzi I saw, but would need to find. I think it was a Stornello 125.

I have a 175TS same as Ian, it too has this type of sprocket and I'm having a hell of a job locating one too!

Nigel Lacey told me that they were indeed fitted to the early models with Grimeca hubs, but that he too has been unable to find a source. As Ian has already said, they are fitted to other small 50s and 60s Italian marques too.

I'm going to have a word with Talan Engineering in Yeovil, UK this Autumn when I take the bike off the road for a final fettle before the Giro next year. They supply Nigel Lacey with his 'normal' sprockets and although they weren't overly enthusiastic when he approached them previously about making a small batch of these unusual ones. I'm hoping that if another person also asks the same question, they may change their mind. Nigel has already said he would take some if that helped make the numbers work.

I'll let you all know how I get on in the next couple of minutes months. At the moment with the weather good, I'm having way too much fun riding the bike to take the sprocket off to show anyone :D

So after a few days of emailing and googling. I got a response from rebelgears.com saying they can recreate one for around $100. Seems like this might be the best option.
