Engine Number ???

Postby dlearl476 » Tue Aug 27, 2019 4:07 am

Anyone know of an authoritative source on engine numbers. The best I can find is the list on Steve’s Bevel Heaven site, but it seems kind of funky.

I’ve got engine numbers 85590 and 102857 and the near figures on Steve’s list put them at ‘62-‘63 SCR motors. I have the frame foil for 102857 and it says it’s a “196” 250 SCR.

Walker’s book doesn’t really cover production numbers. Is Ian Fallon’s any better?

Ian Falloon is the best published source. (The museum might respond to individual inquiries, but I don't know.)

The data on there hasn't been cleaned. It comes complete with all sorts of 'author errors'.

According to Ian: 250 Diana Mark 3 (1962-63). He gives the the range for this model as DM250 80001 - 85851

According to Ian: 250 Monza (1965-68). Range for this model: DM250 85852 - 104500

That info wasn't available when Mick wrote his book.

Factory records destroyed. I have always thought my 250 NC M3 was made a couple of years before the paperwork says. Confirmation came from a surprising source. A chance purchase in a charity bookshop has a photo of the Barcelona 24 hours winning 250 in the back of the van with Paul Smart and its reg number is so close I thought it mine. Obviously from the same supplier Vic Camp and likely the same batch. RYY84F where are you now? Someone has a race winner.

Thanks Craig.

That’s what I was hoping. From what I can’t tell, the bodywork I have is from a 66-67 Monza, afaik

The red metallic fenders are a bit of an oddity, from what I’ve read.

Then yesterday as I was going through boxes looking for bits to complete my ‘68 Scrambler, I found this, which threw a wrench in the works.

Yes, but as we all know, those foil stickers can be purchased blank and stamped with whatever. I even found one on eBay last night that included a stamp set!

But I doubt those have been available for long. The fact that it’s stamped 196 for the year leads me to wonder if it wasn’t original Berliner, owing to the old practice of titling cars/bikes in the year they were sold, not the year they were manufactured.

In the list on Steve’s site I noticed several that were listed as “196”. I assume someone forgot to stamp the final digit.

Yes and no :) .

It would appear - again, quoting Ian - that the 1966-67 250 Scrambler shared some of the engine number sequence as the 250 Monza :o . (Actually, nothing unusual in that ...)

So:
1966-67 250 Scrambler: 92172-104500. More details on how to distinguish this model on page 137 of Ian's, "Book of the Ducati OHC Singles".

P.s. The final date stamp on the tin foil was rarely - if ever? - completed.

Thanks. I really need to get Ian's book. I'm actually watching a couple of auctions. Since I have the foil, and it's unstamped, I'm going to add a 7 so I can use my '67 plate when I register it. Or, I may buy the "66D" 2002 Olympic plate I found on eBay last night and title it as a '66.

As to your post script: It was common practice here to license bikes in the year the were sold intitially, rather than when they were manufactured. I suppose Berliner left the last digit blank expecting the selling dealers to stamp them, and many didn't.

Good news for us!

Hi, I have just got a 450 Shotgun in pieces and working through what I have got and am interested if finding out if the frame number and engine number are right for this model. Here people have mentioned Ian Falloon's book is the best reference. Which of his books would be the right one for me to get. Cheers for now.

For information, the replica stickers I've seen available are not "foil" and very distinguishable from the originals. The one pictured is original and the information is typed and not stamped. The font on the typewriter used is not the same as that generally available on letter and number stamps.

Regards Nigel
