ignition drive shaft shim

Ducati 250 MK3, can anyone tell me where the shim goes on the ignition drive shaft please.
It looks like it should be on the outside rather than against the crankcase, haynes manual I have does not show.

Clymer manual and factory spares list shows shim on both ends, same size, 15.5 x 22 x 1

My bike only had one shim, hopefully some of the many different bevel shims I bought may fit.
