Front Wheel Parts

Postby Teckhardt » Wed Jul 21, 2010 5:19 am

The speedo drive plate on my front wheel is missing the felt and disc (953 & 963). I am guessing that these help space out the plate so that it does not rub on the hub.

Anyone know of a source? The usual suspects don't seem to list them.

Hi Teckhardt

I have not faced the same problem as you.

But my suggestion is to have the two items made by a local machine shop. Maybe the felt ring can be replaced by a nylon (POM) ring, or a different
soft material.

If we were situated i far bit closer I could have helped you, or found someone to do it.

I hope it helps

Write to me if you have any difficulties

Does your front wheel have those parts? I have two different speedo plates and neither have them. Don't think they could come out with the seal in place as the disc is the same OD as the seal.

This one on ebay does not have them either.

I have one on my speedo plate. It's 3 pieces. A cup that goes inside the wheel, the felt and then a flat seal. Well I wouldn't call it a seal cuz it just hold the felt in place. I can see how they will come out and be lost very easily. They could also be damaged easily, because they are thin metal. I'll post a pic of mine tonite.

I think they just keep crap out of the speedo, but I could be wrong. Didn't seem heavy enough to brace against to use as a spacer, but I could be mistaken.

Think you are right.

Phil @ Road and Race advised "just stick a large oring in there - it is only to keep grease from flinging out of speedo drive"

A pic would be great.

Felt seals (check sizes) can be bought from classic bike suppliers Norville etc or cut from carpet tile or similar materials, flat shields can be cut from scrap with tin snipps and drilled/filed to shape.

Hi Teckhardt

I have not checked mine yet. My workshop is full with Yamaha FS1 parts. I am helping a 16 yo relative getting back on the road with his moped.

The moped was so mistreated you wouldn't believe it. It is a 4 speed 1979 50cc.

I hope someone finds the washers for you

Interesting. It looks like yours has an extra pc not shown on the diagram.

What order were they in? Guessing flat pc/ cup/ felt.

Think I may make them based on the dims on the parts diagram.

The felt goes in the cup then the flat goes over that.

I believe that #963 is the Felt, #953 is the flat, and #973 is the cup.
