A bit late to say this but a well respected single specialist, when I told him I was going to do plug chops to check the carb / mixture, told me, never remove the plug from a hot engine, only when cold.
This of course makes plug chopping out of the question.
I would be interested in hearing the opinion of others.

I quite agree with you.

The sparkplug hole had already been rethreaded (badly) when I bought the unfinished project and I quickly found that the inset often unscrewed itself with the plug when hot, despite multiple attempts to fix it in place with Loctite bearing seal.

It was finally fixed by a local classic engine restorers, more of which in one of my other threads.

I now only remove it when cold and as you say it makes gauging fuelling more difficult, as I can only get a tough guide as to how it is performing generally over a period of time.

My next stop, once I've put a few more miles on it, is to take it to a Dyno and get them to set it up properly.
