250 Monza Project, might build a mini Super Sport

I just picked up a pair of Mid-60's Ducati Monza 250, plus a scrambler frame, and some parts, for $800. They're pretty rough.





Because both of these are pretty rough, I'm thinking for the cost of restoring one, I might as well just build a cool custom instead.
I just found this body kit for Ducati singles. THIS is what I want to do with it!

I'm definitely wanting to build up wheels with flanged alloy rims, and will do a 12 volt conversion, LED lighting, and likely one of the digital ignition systems as well.

The SLS front brake on my blue square-tank Monza are pretty useless. As pretty as they are all polished up, I'm thinking about swapping out the front hub for something that has a 2LS brake, maybe Honda, but, if I can get something Italian that will will fit the stock fork built-in stay vs. having to use a separate stay like the Honda, that'd be great.

I'd love to hear suggestions and what others have tried.

Also, I'm open to a complete front end swap, as better forks would be really nice too.

if you buy the kit, it appears they have different kits for wide and narrowcase bikes

An old brake with glazed, hard shoes and a rusty, out of round hub probably won't stop that great, but if rebuilt it will work fine. The 2 sided single leading shoe brake isn't that much of an improvement- the photo shows that the shoes are quite a bit narrower- the gain in friction area isn't as much as you might be expecting- it's around 40%, but that assumes all 4 shoes are in contact simultaneously- maybe after they wear in for a while. The Ducati(Grimeca?) 2 sided brake is better ventilated, but unless you're racing and getting brake fade you probably won't notice much difference.

You can fit a 2LS plate from a Honda 160 or and Aermacchi, but they both require machine work and the Aermacchi need to be on the other side of the hub- lots of fooling around for a 20 horsepower bike.

I found that once caught in the rain with my 4 shoe Grimeca, front brakes had virtually zero effect due to the open air scoop.
The one on the 2 shoe brake is fake news - there aren't really any holes.
Mine was easily enough modified with some thin plastic cut from an oil container, glued in place with silicone sealant, inside so not visible.
