Have to dissagree Hans, the bolt 040 just does not exist on my bike and gear 195 is for a widecase , the puzzle continues!. The French manual has widecase and narrowcase mixed in together,

Of course you don't have bolt 040, as the second figure depicts the w/c kickstarter mechanism. The first figure is the right one, shows the two versions of the spring for the ratchet gear. Maybe I did not explain clearly enough what was meant ...
So, for me there's no puzzle. Btw, the parts list shows 2 gear sets, with different ratios (for different models).
Concernng the french manual you are right in a way. They mixed a photo of the widecase engine (left) with the drawings from the n/c parts list. But the caption on the LH side explains the n/c mechanism and it's modification, also the gear ratios 18/19 or 20/22. OK, my french is quite bad, so I could hardly translate the details. But I have no doubt I understand the text.

cheers Hans

Hi Hans , I am handicaped as usual for an English , I speak no French!,and will have nothing to do with it. Not surprising as 60 years ago this small boy was beaten black and blue by my brute of a French teacher! Luckily I did not tell my dad (he would have Killed him). I am beginning to think the problem could be with the gear that 280 engages with as the slipping tooth can be manipulated to work . Thanks for your efforts.

 for your comment ...

Addendum:
I just grabbed Mick Walker's book "Ducati singles restoration" from my shelf, and found a page describing kickstart issues in it. Mr. Walker writes:

Kickstarter

For many years this was the Achilles' heel of the
Ducati single in its aspiration to become a creditable
street bike. All the narrowcase ohc singles manu-
factured up until the introduction of the widecase
models in the spring of 1968 suffer, to a greater or
lesser extent, from unreliability in this area. This
centres around the quadrant gear that matches up to
its sister gear, which is part of the kickstart shaft to
which the operating lever is attached. Not only do
the teeth tend to break on these gears (notably the
separate quadrant), but the two leaf springs which
hold the quadrant gear in place are simply not up to
the task. The 350 Sebring, 250 Mach 1 and narrowcase
Mark 3s are the most badly affected.

good luck with your efforts on the kickstart mechanism !

Hans
