Flywheel position for 160 with stock ac ignition?

Postby Classictrial » Fri Dec 29, 2017 9:12 pm

Wonder if anyone can please advise the correct flywheel fitting position for a 160 with stock ac ignition? There used to be an OHC workshop manual in the tech section, but cant seem to open it now? Also seen some Motoplat CDI systems listed on Ebay from Mototrans bikes, but all thats pictured is HT coil and trigger coil/rotor, and would guess these would only fit Spanish bikes and would of course also need to correct stator and flywheel? 311990173291

I don't have experience of the 160, but the shop manual for 4 & 5 speed models includes this one.
There is a listing in it with some data on flywheel position.
The way I read it, the 160 has a relatively small auto-advance range of 18 degrees.
I think that means it has batteryless AC ignition, comparing to 28 deg for battery models that can handle the bigger adv-ret range.
The flywheel mounting position for the 160 is stated as 32 to 36 degrees, the mark being to the left of the TDC position.
Let me know if you want the manual PDF.

With regard to CDI, I've confirmed on a bench magneto tester that the Spanish Motoplat and the alternative Ducati flywheel rotors can be interchanged.
That is, they work fine mixing Spanish and Italian rotors/stators.
Pole pieces are dimensionally identical, and the clearances match.
Also, the pickup trigger assemblies on the RH side are interchangeable.
The alternator stator must be used with its matching CDI/coil unit, as wiring is done differently between Motoplat and Ducati.

I don't know if these CDI systems could be adapted to your 160.

It's available here on motoscrubs/tech: http://www.motoscrubs.com/Ducati_Electrics/Ign_Flywheel.htm

The widecase stators have 4 mounting holes and a larger outer diameter, imho can't be easily adapted to the 160, which has 3 mounting holes.

Many thanks for your replies, very helpful. If you can send me PDF of the OHC manual Jordan that would be great.

Jordan and Classictrial,

if needed I can provide a smaller one for the later n/c models including the 160 Moza jr. and 350 Sebring (~18 MB, english), as well as a version for the older 125-250 series (~21 MB, italian). Transfer can be done via sendspace https://www.sendspace.com/, as some email providers limit the size of attachments.

cheers Hans
