Anybody know of any resources for info related to Ducati single rear shocks? Like how to disassemble them. What is serviceable? Can they be rebuilt? I can't find much out there.

The makers of Ikon suspension units, when they were called Proven Products, used to advertise that they could repair any shock absorber.
That's encouraging.

I've only done the units on my w/c Scrambler. They came apart easy enuf. You need to knock up some kind of spring compressor to get at the retaining balls.





After that all is very simple inside.

Wow, that is exactly what I was looking for! The trick I was missing was the retaining balls. I'm going to make a jig to compress them ASAP. Essentially just a spring with a damper I guess. Thanks for the photos Craig.

Any way to know how much oil to use upon reassembly? Just buy the kit an put 1/2 in each?

The rods on mine are pretty corroded so I'm not sure they will be salvageable, but I'll take them apart and find out where I'm at.

the Ducati vintage store sell a rebuild kit with demperrods .

you have to cut the old rods from the top piece ( cast in ) and the drill a hole and tap M7 threads in the top shock mount

i think the shocks take about 65 cc of oil

I can't now remember how much or what I used . But I have this from Rich Kennedy:

"In refilling the shock with damping fluid, I have taken the advice of Henry Hogben in Canada: 50cc of 5w oil. You can experiment with this to the extent of changing the viscosity up to 10w. Phil Hitchcock recommends 60-65ccs of oil.

Have the piston assembly at the bottom of its stroke when refilling, then tighten up the seal collar. Again, don't over tighten. Use a new O- ring for the seal between the collar and the shock body."

Also I used medium weight synthetic fork oil in mine.
The spring compressor is nice but not totally necessary you can do it by hand with a helper, might only cost you a beer.

Disassembled using a drill press and found items



Worked out well as the drill press has a lock which allowed me to leave it compressed while I worked on the collars and retaining balls.

I'm afraid the top one is too far gone to salvage, but y'all have talked me out of giving up so far. Continuing down the path...

Not much purchase on the hex wrench surfaces. 50 years of crud holding them together. Might be the only thing holding them together

More like a LOT of REPEATED heat .. and easing oil ... and patience. The aluminum is as soft as butter, by the way. Fun, eh?!
