Points or Electronic Ignition?

I still use points together with a pazon box, the capacitor is not needed anymore and the points last. Starting is easier however I'm concerned how the timing varies with the points gap, yesterday I checked the timing and found great difficulty in getting back to the correct timing after trying different gaps, there was no consistency, the system does not appear worn .I think its more that the points cam is an unusual shape,perhaps not consistant.
