Monza Jr wire routing

Postby DucMonzter » Fri Jul 29, 2016 2:38 am

Hello all,

I'm in the final stages of wiring up my Series 1 Monza Jr. (round tank) and I have a few questions about the correct wire routing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. In what location does the ground wire (from the battery's negative terminal) connect to the frame? I realize it can be connected to any exposed metal on the bike, but I'd like to know where the ground wire was originally connected.

2. How should the long, black tail light wire be routed between where it exits the wiring conduit and where it enters the hole in the rear fender. Currently this wire makes a sharp bend upward along the frame and stretches diagonally downward to the hole in the rear fender. This doesn't seem like the cleanest solution and I'd like to know if there is a better way to route this wire.

3. What should be the length of the 3-conductor cable between the crankcase and terminal block?

Thank you,
Jeff

I have a '66 that appears to be 100% original. Not sure the wiring layout is the same as your earlier 160. But if nobody pipes up here with the info you need, I'll see if I cannot get the dimensions and wire routing you are looking for.

regards,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your offer to help. I'm still seeking the information I originally requested and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm aware that the battery arrangement was different between the earlier and later models, but there should be some similarities that would enable me to make reasonable assumptions.

Best Regards,
Jeff

Finally remembered to do this.

Not sure how original the wiring routing is on the bike. There are a number of white zip ties which I'm sure are not original.

The wiring up front is pretty straight forward. From the switch on the handlebar, it follows the bar to the tree. It goes behind the left fork tube , between the top and bottom tree, then down and up thru the hole in the bottom of the headlight.

The harness coming out of the headlight goes thru the same hole in the bottom, between the trees and fork legs and to the left of the steering head. There it goes into the tank tunnel.

That same harness exits the tank tunnel on the left side of the backbone, goes over the rear frame loop and straight down to the terminal block.

The tailight wiring goes up the terminal block thru a hole in the front of the rear fender, behind the battery and then follows the bottom of the fender, being held by clips and out a hole to the taillight.

Alternator harness comes out the plastic gland on the top of the engine case, goes thru the big welded on loop on the vertical backbone of the frame to the left of the horn, and then up to the terminal block.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Rob - your information will be very helpful. Did you happen to notice where the negative battery wire is grounded to?

Thanks again,
Jeff

I think it was on a swingarm bolt. I recheck tomorrow.

Yup. Just went out and rechecked and there is a ground wire connected to one of the swingarm pinch bolts. That has to be an owner bodge.
