What can you tell me about this engine number?
DM250
----------
101249
5 speed? (Tom Bailey book seems to think it is by split stamping)
NC or WC?
Scrambler ? Frame has strut connecting top rails near rear shocks. But engine falls between monza and SCR per Bevel Heaven guide...? Mikuni carb is fitted.
(406 250 Mark 2 Monza 1967 DM250 101172 U.S.A.)
(407 250 SCR DM250 101254)
Has an older round gas tank but appears mostly there otherwise. I'm hoping its a scrambler as I already have an early monza.
Thanks,
Toby

____ It was issued for late 1966 !
" 5 speed?
NC or WC? "
____ The 5-sd.trans equipped models came-out beginning 1963,
and w-c.models first came-out for the 1967 model-year !!
(So this additional-info should answer those two questions.)
" Scrambler ? Frame has strut connecting top rails near rear shocks. "
____ Then (at-least) the frame is a Scrambler-model.
A Scrambler-motor should also include an added internal chain-guard steel-railing.
" But engine falls between monza and SCR per Bevel Heaven guide...?
(406 250 Mark 2 Monza 1967 DM250 101172 U.S.A.) "
____ In the USA, it was a common (& shady !) practice to title DUCATIs the same year that they finally sold, rather than stick-with the year of actual manufacture ! _ So this is the reason why such 'guides' will indicate inconsistent 'year' listings.
" Mikuni carb is fitted "
____ NOT 'stock' (for any DUCATI) !
" Has an older round gas tank but appears mostly there

____ A 1966-Scrambler should have a small-type battery-tray with backing-plate, and the alt.stator wire-cable should contain three wire-leads - (1-red; 1-white; & 1-yellow) !
__ How about posting a picture of what you have ?

Bob, spot on info there. 3 Wire stator as discussed with very weak light ouput. Battery tray with backing plate. My guess is the 28w stator. One more thing to consider is the 18" rear wheel. Maybe a 1967 model?

____ Indeed, as that's the only stator-model ever employed in stock 1966-67 250/350-Scrambler (& 160M.Jr) models !
" One more thing to consider is the 18" rear wheel. Maybe a 1967 model? "
____ Only the pre-1966 Motocross-type models employed a 19" rear-wheel ! _ So the 18" size is std.issue for all other 250/350/450-models.
