Narrow (or wide) case shock lengths

just bought a pair of shrouded shocks for the Monza. I asked for the length and was told '300 mm or so'. Knowing that many people can't read a tape measure to save their lives, I took the chance.

They arrived and are 295 mm center to center whereas the originals on my Monza (250 mind you) are 310 and my spares (without main springs keeping pressure against the little internal springs) measure 305.

so, who has a list of the various lengths of spring fitted to bevel singles (of all displacements)? I am guessing these fit the 160 Monza and other smaller bikes. Or, were there different lengths fitted to the bigger bikes?

They are complete and without dents in the shrouds so they are worth restoring. But, they may be too short to use on my bike.

I recently bought a set of these for my narrowcase Scrambler. Bolted right on. Your swingarm does pivot?

Nice looking items. But, I like rebuilding the ones I have when possible.

Your question is a bit confusing. Yes, the swingarm pivots. Otherwise, it would be much of a swing arm!

The linked items' length is closer to my originals and first spares than the ones I just received though. Interesting.

There's a cross section drawing of a suspension unit with some dimensions in the narrowcase workshop manual.
Although the specific application isn't stated, it's in a section on dismantling a 250.

Indeed, it does! 295 mm, +/- 5 mm, center to center. No other info, really. Strange that they say they aren't serviceable. They're less of a chore than the forks and don't need multiple special tools.

Now, as luck would have it, I was just in the basement dismantling one of the new assemblies and found something else that (to me) is new/different.

As I said in my first post, the 'new' shocks are shorter (though apparently 'correct') by about 10 mm. Upon taking a unit apart, I found the spring to be about 25 mm shorter than my originals/spares in free length. I haven't measured the wire diameter or the # of coils but, now I'm wondering how many different SPRING lengths there are.

Are you certain that all your shocks are Marzocchi ? Because some later models did use Telesco shocks which are very similar... I have about 12 spare sets of shocks here off of different years and models, if i get around to it i will check the length of them.

Not 200% sure but, the design is the same between them all. Except for slight details, even the guts are nearly identical. I did find that the pistons on my originals and spares have rings to seal against the cylinders while the new ones do not. Preload adjusters are the same as are the seal holders. Is there some definitive feature of the Telesco that would identify them?
