Picked up a 250 'Daytona' a few weeks ago in desperate need of some love, Its not run for a number of years. It was registered in Jan 62, making it a very early bike I believe, first registered owner is John Surtees Ltd. Second owner was a Vicar in London I think who must have had it for quite a few years, apparently he had a collection of Ducati singles and this must have been where several crucial parts went missing to (headlight, brake parts etc). Anyway, it was purchased from him earlier this year by a chap who never got round to it and I got hold of it a couple of weeks ago.
Just managed to get stuck into the engine last night, confirmed small valve head with about the least lift cam you can get, piston is an original 4 ring job, not in bad nick, but I'll not re-use it. Small end bush isn't central.
The Intrigue for me was the Stator / Rotor - Its a Lucas job, looks identical to their Kits as fitted to 60's Triumphs etc (recently built a couple of them) - I had a quick google last night, but didn't turn anything up. Anyone have any info - was this something that was 'done' years ago?
Crank has a couple of initials on it next to the sludge trap, so I take it thats been rebuilt at some point.
Plans are to build the engine to 'Mach 1' spec or better - The cam is being sent off today for re-profiling + rockers for re-facing. I've had a quote to turn the head into a large valve one with some porting - Any recommendations in the UK for this work? And I'm looking at conn rod options - no idea where to go with this so I'll see if a local Eng shop can get the crank apart (they're pretty good) and will look to you lot for help when done!
Here's a few pics:
