Identification from Ducati Tanks

Hallo,

last year i couldt buy two tanks for my Diana project.
Now i have a Problem - with the book from Tom Bailey i looked on the bottom side from my tanks and could see, the red is a Little bit smaller than the blue.

Okay - the blue is from a Diana and the red from a mach 1 ( the devil is a squirrel) - now lets look on the underside:

Now i think the blue tank is a mach 1 tank but what is the red ?
On the Website http://www.coolitalianbikes.com/ducatidiana you can see two different diana tanks.

The blue tanks looks like a Mach 1 tank to me, but the red one has me scratching my head. Could it be something other than a Ducati tank?


Just the general shape of the large cavity is a bit different than I am used to seeing. Usually the cavity is more "egg" shaped, with gentle curves.

Could the red one be a Benelli tank?

I don't think it's a Riverside/Benelli tank (at least not a 250/350). The 250/350 Riverside/Benelli fuel petcock bungs are located further back, the tank rear mount bracket is a pin and the shape of the underside cutout is different. Attached are 2 pictures of a NOS Riverside/Benelli 250/350 tank.

It's not a MK3 tank like the attached is it? Similar to a Mach 1 but a bit bigger. Sorry it's on the bike so I can't photo the underneath.

Those MK3 tanks were chamfered (flatter edges) and the cutout underneath is more generous as well.

thanks for your answers.
I do not think that it is an motobi tank.
The bottom surface is identical with the M1 tank, it has the same edge on the side panels, the distance between the cutouts for the frame and the fillerhole are the same.
The distance between the the edges is a little bit smaller - from edge to edge on the backside of the filler cap is on the red tank 1 cm / 0,4" smaller.
The mounting holes are identical - the red tank fits on the frame very good.
I will make some new fotos with a good camera tomorrow.

Could it bee an tank from an F3 or SC model?

Hi Karsten,

Here are 2 photos of my Mach 1 tank. I bought my Mach 1 in 1973 and am fairly confident that this was its original tank.

I think the blue tank is closer to my Mach 1 tank. It has an enlarged cavity for the carburettor.

The blue tank appears to have sleeves welded onto the front mounting lugs. I assume that these sleeves are so a rubber mounting bush or grommet can be used. My tank does not have these sleeves. (I enlarged my front bolt holes to allow the rubber grommets to be fitted. I also made sleeves to fit inside the grommets so that the bolts can tighten up onto something solid, and the tank is properly isolated).

My Mach 1's build date is October 1965 (stamped on inside of fork slider). Maybe this sleeve was an improvement on later Mach 1 models.

I can take further photos or measurements if you like. The tank goes back on this Saturday though.
