Oil Pump Chatter

Postby blaat! » Sat Jan 05, 2013 11:23 pm

Hi All,
When I assemble my oil pump gears into the housing and hold the steel plate in place, I can feel chatter when rotating the gears. It only happens when I push the gear against the steel plate while rotating. It also happens when it is fully assembled. I tested it with a bit of oil on the gears/plate with the same results.

Normal? Should I replace the steel plate as it has some minor wear from the gears (see photo)? Any other suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks!

With the low pressure oil system, it's not critical to have perfection at the sealing surfaces. It's why wear on the timing side crankshaft bush is of no consequence. But, to improve your end plate you could lap it with valve grinding paste on some plate glass.
