primary pinion and woodruff key on Ducati single

Hi. Me again. Is the primary drive helical pinion on my 450 Ducati supposed to have a recessed interior? I can't see the point unless the previous owner was into some weight saving. If that is normal, what size of woodruff key goes into the shaft / pinion? Which work better: tab washers or spring-type washers? Hope someone can help here. Thanks in anticipation. Ross

And available from Nigel Lacey - along with the correct tab washer. And a new nut ... and shims, should you need 'em :)

P.s I think there may be a shoulder machined on the inside of the pinion -? Tsk! Can't remember now ... :? Best ask Nigel!

Hi,

I believe, as Eldert has already mentioned, you must be refering to the oil grove... It IS supposed to be there, and as far as I know is there on all Ducati single primary gears... As for the washers, I use the original tab washers myself, some claim the "spring" or bellville washers are the way to go, to each his own I guess... Here are some pics of a primary gear up close, the factory drawings can be deceiving at times...

Mine seems to be bigger than just an oil groove. I know the previous owner did quite a lot of work on the engine. Thanks for your help. I am going to try again with a tab-washer.
