If times are that tough you have to join 2 rods maybe I can help look for cheap second hand parts suitable to be reused for you over here? (Australia)
It would not be nice to have something fail and destroy an engine. (mental picture here, hiding behind a bunker when your motor is started and reved for the first time)
I've seen lots of 250 engines on US ebay that seem very cheap (to me) that could be used for parts.
Maybe I can help? I'll certainly ask around for you.
