On the face of it, it looks like the 'Best Buys' from the Taglioni era were the Pantahs:

(146) 1981 600SL Pantah: $2,651.51
(171) 1983 500SL Pantah: $3,030.30

And this wasn't so bad, if you can accept the styling (ignore the wrong year):
(165) 1977 900 S2: $5,303.03

I notice a couple of Parallel Twins did ok:
(129) 1983 GTV 500: $3,030.30
(194) 1980 350 Sport Desmo: $4,166.66

While this seems absurd:
(192) 1971 750GT: $49,242.38

Especially when compared with:
(179) 1999 748 Biposto: $3,787.88
(120) 2000 996 Biposto: $5,151.51
(196) 1993 900 Superlight: $5,303.03
(143) 1996 916 Biposto: $5,303.03
(130) 1991 851: $9,848.48

Obviously - and what else would you expect? - an auction more for collectors than riders!

My dad also has a 71' 750 GT and he's always telling me it's worth $35K+ which I was highly sceptical of because decent bikes are going for sub-20K here in Australia. However, I believe the first 500 of the 71models were pre-production with hand cast engine, and I know dads is one of these first 500. So that might explain the high price of the RM bike?

The prices posted included the buyers premium and fees. No VAT on the bikes since they more tha 10 years old. I know as I was there and bought 3 bikes.

Also, do not get too hung up on the GT750 and 50 SL1 prices. There were a couple of folks battling it out who really wanted the bikes and did not care about the actual worth, I spoke to both after the auction and each needed their bikes and had the means to pay whatever it took.

Did you notice the Pantahs, btw? Any apparent reason why they went cheap?

Yep, always the case in auctions - only needs two equally furious bidders

Ah, fair point. That explains the price a little bit, plus Tony's observation of two equally determined bidders. Better tell you're Dad to quit riding and start polishing ...

Good question on why some of the bikes went so cheap - I think they really did not have the right audience. I was looking at some of the 350 Pantahs myself and now wish I had bought 2 that went for $1000 or less. I got an 85 sport and 100 sport - I will post pics when they actually arrive here in USA.

I suspect it will be a long time before we ever see an auction like that again.
