'66 Scrambler Resto - Need some advice too

Postby spydrshred » Thu May 10, 2012 1:06 pm

Hello all, I have a 66 Scrambler 250 I am working on restoring (slowly). It was my father's that he originally bought back in the early 70s. Aside from a few parts here and there (the rear fender being the most difficult to find currently), I am fortunate that I have all of the original parts for the particular bike, with matching frame and engine. I am also fortunate to have an uncle who is an expert in vintage ducatis to teach and help with engine work and locating parts.

I am excited to finish, although the process is slow, as I want to take my time and do it right and learn as much as possible.

I am at a crossroads though when it comes to the "design" of the bike. I am a big fan of cafe racer bikes and had thought of rebuilding it in that style. I am torn, though. Because of the originality and relative rarity of these bikes, I feel like I shouldn't do anything but 100% original.

Whatever I do, it wouldn't be anything too crazy though. No cutting the frame or fenders or anything like that. Nothing undo-able per se.
I was thinking of things like:
- Lower clubman style handle-bars
- Customized rearsets (without mods to the frame)
- Modified paint scheme. Maintaining the original black and silver, but with ducati red detail striping instead of the yellow/gold, the meccanica logo instead of the eagle, black fenders instead of silver, and maybe a few other select "adjustments".
- the seat foam and vinyl was unsalvageable, so i just have the metal pan to work with. I am going to do the seat the same as original but maybe with some pillowing or pleating (I don't know the correct term to describe what I mean).

It is definitely early to be thinking about this sort of thing, but it is something I can easily play around with when I am not working on the bike.

I know a lot of people can have a lot of differing opinions on this type of thing. What do any of you think?

I had the same "dilema" with my project. My bike was my dads also and started life as a Scrambler. I chose the Cafe' style with the same thought. I can always turn it back into the original bike if i want. I have every single original piece stored away. For now i like the Cafe" style and it is fun and fast to ride. Attached are a couple of pictures of where i started and where i ended up. Enjoy the process thats half the fun.

Welcome , I too have a '66 Scr in the process of a snail's pace resto. I am more of a stock kind of guy, not down to the nut and bolt mind you but enough to call it original. My only departure from this plan will be a 12 volt system for a bit more reliability. My suggestion would be to change all you want, but not to the point of no return. You may want to change it back. Just my $0.02 since you asked. Good luck and have fun.
