[quote="bodge ...
" could do with knowing the original wire/winding of the 40 watt used in the 175 and the expected resistance of its coils for comparison. "

____ Even-though I've never had a 175-stator to measure the resistance of it's coil-windings,, there's really no reason to suspect that they're much different than the lighting-coil of any other 4-pole stator-model, (which means they too should measure .5 ~ .7 ohm each).

" i take it that if the 160 28 watt is the better option for 12 volt all battery conversion due to the smaller dia wire of its ignition coil it would be even better if the other dual winding on that stator were rewound to match ? "

____ While your conclusive notion seems like a fairly logical deduction, it may possibly be a backward-step in the wrong-direction just as well as possibly being a step towards the expected further-improved direction. _ Cuz what matters more-so, is how well the stator-impedance 'matches' the resistance-level of the load-system. _ (It's such relationship as this, that mainly determines whether an alternator is rated as 6 or 12 volt, depending whether it's impedance-level more-so matches the resistance-level of a 6v or 12v load-system,, [and it's certainly apparent that alternators alone, don't really produce any set voltage-amount !].)
Also,, it isn't really the "smaller dia" of the winding, it's rather it's resulted longer-length that actually makes it more suited for 12v.charging.
__ So what matters most, is to determine how the operating resistance-level of your chosen 12v.headlight compares to that of the stock 6v.bulb. _ If your chosen HL.bulb happens to be of greater resistance (as would ordinarily be expected for a 12v.version), then a longer (& more resistive) coil-winding would accordingly better match,, but if your chosen 12v.bulb's wattage-rating is high enough so-that it's operating-resistance happens to be even less than that of the stock-6v.bulb, then perhaps a thicker-gauge coil-winding (with resulting lowered impedance) would rather be the better suited match.
So like I've also previously indicated, it can all be fairly complex to iron-out to an exactly-correct degree,, so keeping the varied coil selection that already exists, thusly leaves you with a 'happy-medium' that may possibly provide you with the best-of-both-worlds.
(You'd just need a 4th wire-lead added, in order to keep all your possible selections externally accessibly available.)
__ To still further address your notion of rewinding your lighting-coil,, a more important reason for the possible need to rewind that power-coil, would rather-be because it's insulation-coating has been burnt mainly in the area which was-not submerged below the oil-level when a possible battery-connection mishap had possibly occurred.
In any case, you still need to check that both power-coils still retain normal resistance-values.

____ Please feel free to bring-up any more questionable related-aspects that'll help you to "mull over" your various options !

____ Do you already have some-kind of (12-volt ?) headlamp,, and if-so, what light-wattage does it have installed in it ?
