I assume from your profile 'location' that your either a resident of the "Red continent" or the "Land of the long white cloud"? So not sure of your local parts suppliers

Yes, I'm from the Big Island, not the long white cloud one. We have some parts suppliers but the Vento is rare.

Aye cooperplace,

I assume 'Road and Race' have "passed" on these items on your shopping list?

These wee beasties are not exactly "common" over here either. Good luck with your search.

Good health, Bill

Recambiousado is your best bet for parts - long way away though! Jesus Guzman, the owner speaks some English, which helps (well, it's better than my Spanish).

Hi Jon,
is the Vento parts book available online? Or can I buy a copy of it? I haven't seen it anywhere.
Thanks
Peter

I gather some people feel an engine that's sat for a few years (like this one) should always be stripped down.
I have to say I am of that persuation. But, it's your engine. ;)

Good health, Bill

So how far do you think I should go with this engine? Having just read the Haynes manual section on engine dismantling, it seems a big job. Would you split the case? Pull it down to every last part? How long does that take?

Thanks

Just set your timing marks (dots on bevels) and pull the head and barrel off it, (put a rag in the crankcase mouth as you remove the barrel in case you have a broken ring it will stop it falling in) ........that bit is easy and will let you do a rudimentary check on the cylinder bore/piston condition and the big end, wash the big end down with a solvent to get the oil out of it and that will give you a rough idea off how worn it is, any up/down play or roughness when rotating is not good (don't rotate the crank the full 360* to check, just go 180* clockwise then 180* back to where you started otherwise you will lose your valve timing!) if the engine has sat for a long time the clutch will probably be stuck, which will need the primary case removed and the clutch dismantled to free it up, again with care an easy job. A couple of hours work on the above will give you a good idea if you need to go for a full engine strip. If all appears well and you put it together again to try and run it.......heat the crankcase up with a blow heater or a hot air gun and dump whatever oil comes out, refill with any old cheap cr*p 20w50 mineral oil and when you get it going just run it for say 20minutes and then drain the sump again dump that oil as well, then you can refill with some decent oil to to try and run it on,
Cheers,
George

I'd agree with what George says, but was the bike running when you bought it? If it was running perfectly, then there is no need to touch it, except maybe to take off the head and check the valves and rockers, and bore wear, but if it is a non-runner, then it is an unknown quantity, and God knows what could be wrong with it!

I can send you a copy in pdf, Peter, if you let me have your e-mail - the forum doesn't accept pdfs as attachments.

Un saludo

Craig
