Advance and retard units come with different ranges and cam shape, they are also marked with a part number for ID. If you are running points and conventional battery system with the alternator just charging the battery you will need the unit that provides the correct dwell for a normal coil 6 or 12 volt. Some Monza units are ideal and also provide the right range too. If you are running an original MAG/battery less system this has its own type of advance unit and coil. In the UK most bikes came with the battery powered ignition , and an advance/retard unit that works fine and gives a range that allows kickstarting without too many tears. It all depends what you have already and what you want to do.

I have a scrambler engine that has a magneto (2 coils in the stator but common ground lead to chassis) and no battery. My flywheel has a notch at 32 degrees before TDC.
I noticed 2 part numbers in the parts literature:
Fixed Advance Unit 0601.34.280
Automatic Advance Unit 0400.34.280
Would mine require an automatic or fixed type?

Don't Know! ,I'm not an expert on scramblers, there are some here that are. I suspect its the fixed unit. From what I've heard you need to consider the following. Are you FIT, young,athletic, good lungs, full of testosterone and yourself? If so then you do need the mag system to knock you back a peg or two.Alternatively if you are like most of us, dodgy knee,sciatica, smokers cough,beer belly etc ,convert it to a battery system so that you can actually use the thing to ride to the pub,pose and pretend to be cool.

i pretty sure a narrowcase scrambler used a AA 367 B advance unit , and yes it has a diff camshape to saturate the coil .
it advances only 18 degrees instead of 28 .

When I mentioned standard, I meant original (as factory supplied). Occasionally you do come across modified units, but there is no reason to do this unless you have a modified engine that may require a different span or rate of advance for some reason. The two units I know of are the AA367B with 18 degrees advance and the AA359 with 28 degrees of advance. The subject of which advance unit fits which has been discussed at length on the forum somewhere so if you search you should find information on there. As far as I know the 18 degree unit goes with the magneto system and the 28 degree unit goes with the battery system.
The part number for the battery ignition unit is 0400.34.280 which is the AA359. Fits the Mach 1 , Monza, GT, Sebring, some European Mark3 and widecase scramblers.
The part number for the magneto ignition unit is 0603.34.280 which is marked AA367B. Fits 160 monza, Narrowcase 250 scrambler/motocross and some US mark 3's, and maybe early Widecase scramblers.
Never come across the fixed cam in the UK but I believe that was fitted to some US narrowcase models or maybe an optional extra.

Good feedback here. And Bob, I am in that transition phase from being young and fit to bloated and achy all over
but when the bike was running, I never had the chance to kick-start it. The kick was slipping so I always bumped started it. But now that I have done the repair job on the kick-start (thanks to this forum), I can;t wait to try and see how much damage I can do to my leg

IF you can learn to start it astride the bike (left leg) , and when that leg is HOR's de combat!, you will at least have your best leg left .

this pic came from someone else's post here, but I've just installed a new cable on my 250 monza and it looks v similar. It looks too long to me, but there's an impressive ferrule at each end, and I doubt I could them back on if I decide to cut the cable. is there a correct length for a n/c clutch cable?
