OK Bob, I see.
It's game of you indeed to ride a single, with a gammy leg.

Re: Selector box adjustment??
I'm still struggling with poor selection (which was fair before i messed with it!) , i notice i have about 4mm movement (slack) on the outside lever , is this normal? I was told that the selector box had been O/H by an expert and there did not appear to be any slack bushes or worn items when i looked around. DONT TRY TO FIX SOMETHING THATS NOT BUST!!.

Sorry to hear you're not having luck with it. Could be time to seek professional help!
Can you please tell us what you have tried? Did you disassemble the selector box, or just try external adjustments?

Re: Selector box adjustment??
Hi Jordan,I dismantled the box thinking that a look round and grease up would be helpfull (NOT!) ,the external adjustment must be ultra fussy ,perhaps due to the slack not helping?, As you are aware the stopping and starting routine makes it almost impossible to do on the road adjustments,Frosty roads don't help with the bump starts ,neither do the tailgater types around these days.Nearly got taken out by a speeding JCB (of all things) who could not stop as he'd managed to get his wheels off the ground over the speed humps!.

Re: Selector box adjustment??
The other way to do the external adjustment is to remove the box and mount it firmly (say in a vice) as Nigel suggested, without disassembling it. Then the adjustments can be done and the action checked.
All the ones I've worked on, it was not possible to over adjust to the extent that the eccentric falls out of its fork. It just goes around again.
Wear can develop at the hinged part of the fork (assuming wide case with the hinged type). That might be the source of your pedal play (but I don't think 4mm is grossly bad). Also the teeth of the fork that act against the pins of the selector shaft can wear or be chipped. When it's bad, there's nothing for it except repair or replacement.
When installing to the bike, it's possible to have the slot in the coupling 180 degrees out, so make sure you don't do that. If it was in neutral when you took it off, the selector box should be in neutral position on reassembly for example.

Re: Selector box adjustment??
Hi Jordan, 180 degrees out, done that, no wear in any part but did notice a few extra shims so perhaps it could be a bit stiffer than it should be.I may try the action with the ball bearing left out.Its a 5speed narrow case.
