Colin, two possible reasons from my experience.....too tight a bend somewhere, or too heavy a lubricant, either tends to make the inner screw back and forth in the outer. Cheers george

Thank you for the tips. There are no tight bends, but the grease may well be too thick, I will investigate.

Right, I have shimmed the square end in the gear shaft and cleaned the cable and lubricated it with lithium grease, and everything is working, so we will see.... Thank you everyone for the suggestions.
