A micrometer reading is the best and most accurate way to measure an opening shim, these tools are to allow the use of a vernier to measure shims. The tools only really come into there own measuring the twin closing shims. Even then they are only as good as the tools accuracy and consistency of half rings and shim manufacture. I always joke that original shims come in 0.05mm steps +/- 0.025mm.... Aftermarket shims tend to be more accurate from my experience. For single opening shims you could just use a suitable bearing roller to perform the same task as one of these tools using a vernier.

The only other handy tool for quick shim measuring is a "quick micrometer", but that only comes into it's own when you have lots of shims to measure.
Even then a "proper" micrometer is best for accurate measurement.
