HI Matt-

I didn't get much done on the bikes this weekend- too many other projects and weekend chores to do. But I did locate some petcock filters (I ordered 2), and also some fine brass mesh screen, to use in re-lining the filter tubes on my other 2 petcocks. Once that is taken care of, then I will see about sealing the banjo fitting better (with new filter), and removing the hardened black ring, and will "lock" the lid in place with the setscrew. I do know the float needle is clipped in place properly. I think things will be better with the petcocks filtering, and flowing properly.

I will take some pics of the seat sometime- but the Mach 1 seat may-or-may-not be totally original. I know that I had the Scrambler seat re-covered by a shop on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester Massachusetts. Rocco saved all the fittings and screws and everything, and he matched stitching when he duplicated the scrambler seat cover. That would have been 1983 or so. I KNOW that. But I honestly can't remember if we did the same to the Mach 1. I might have... If so... Rocco would have done the same- original fittings, screws and all. When I bought the Mach 1, (in 1978?) I remember I had the tank painted black by D&B autobody (also in Worcester). When I first found the bike, the tank was mostly spray-can green. I remember thinking the whole thing looked like Christmas. I remember picking up a few odds and ends for the bike, from an ex-dealer in Whitinsville Massachusetts, who had a lot of original parts, just gathering dust in the back of his shop. A tach cable... a tire pump... I bought a racing-number-thing for in front of the headlight, with a plexiglass "windscreen". I remember buying a black megaphone exhaust, but that got crushed. (another story...)

I just can't remember if the seat needed repair or not. So the vinyl might not be original, or the maybe just the stitching isn't. But definitely, the clips, screws, springs, strap, all of that is original.

I do have an engine number, and a frame number... but is that the sort of thing we post on this forum?

Sincerely,

Bob W

Somewhere on the internet is a list of engine and frame numbers with owners names and approx dates of registration ,all sent in by the owners to help date bikes that have missing history etc. Don't post your address for security reasons. The float needle seating in the chamber lid can be cleaned up with a little solvol or toothpaste to grind the needle in , but keep the needle straight while doing it.

Hi Bob,
If your Mach 1 seat is recovered, it’s a fine job. Many recovers as well as the replica seats don’t hold to the original pattern so (if your seat has been recovered) you’re fortunate the craftsman who did the work was so meticulous.

There are many instances of frame and engine numbers being shared on this forum. Search this forum for related terms and you’ll find all sorts of posts on the subject. This forum is something of a resource for identifying and dating Ducati models. Sharing your information adds to that knowledge. The steering head foil is another subject for establishing the provenance of a particular example (does yours have a steering head foil?). All part of what makes Ducati singles interesting, if you’re interested in the history. I don’t understand why owners wish to keep engine or frame numbers private, but I do respect that choice and keep specific information confidential. You can always send me a private message if you wish to contribute. Ciao, Matt

Good morning-

I will get the seat off and take some photographs of the details. Perhaps this weekend.

I am willing to post frame number and engine number of my Mach 1, and can do that for the Scrambler as well, but that will have to wait for the weekend. It is just that I did not know the "etiquette" of this list regarding that. I am also involved in the Lotus Cortina community, and there is a very definite split in the community regarding posting of chassis numbers. I personally am on the side of posting numbers, by the way.

And so, here are the numbers for the Mach 1.

frame number - DM250 * 01596 *IGM

engine number -DM250M1 01347

Sincerely,

Thanks Bob. Does your Mach 1 have a dealer decal on it? If it was initially sold by Ghost Motorcycles that would explain how a Mach 1 like yours made it to the USA. Matt
