____ Most of the differences which distinguish the various models can be changed-around, but if yours is a 'Scrambler' (as I suspect), then you ought-to find an internal chain-guard mounting-hole located atop the chain-inlet/cowling.
" The last time I attempted to use the kick starter, it was failing to engage.
____ That's a common-problem with pre-1966 models !
There have already been MANY thread-posts concerning that issue !
Try doing a search here.
" I ended up removing the kick starter and bump-starting it. "
____ That's too-bad,, as instead, you could've simply learned to lean the bike to the right, so as to get the kick-starter gears to engage !
" Is it worth fixing the kick starter or should I just stick with bump-starting it. "
____ Well that would be up-to you, depending on YOUR needs.
Check-out what the repair-options are, and then decide for yourself.

Yes it does have that hole! so most likely Scrambler engine then.

I didn't remove any part of the mechanism except the kick (pedal). So I'll read up on the fixes and try them (including the leaning you mentioned)

Carburetor question: When I first got the bike, it had an Amal 930 mounted on it. I have since warped its body by over tightening its flange nuts. Now the slide sticks.
I also have a Dellorto UB24 which I have never mounted on the bike. Do you recommend I go back to an Amal 930 or the Dellorto UB24? Or a more suitable third option?

Here's a link to a slipping kick starter repair that Jim F took the time to document.

____ Then it seems you most-likely have a '1965-Scrambler' (which is really a 'Motocross' model, but Berliner insisted it's name be changed to the more popular 'Scrambler' term).
" I also have a Dellorto UB24 which I have never mounted on the bike. Do you recommend I go back to an Amal 930 or the Dellorto UB24? "
____ The 30mm-Amal is too large,, however the 24mm-Del.carb makes a nice choice for a 250Scrambler-model, and in fact works better than the stock 27mm-Del.SSI carb.model !
__ Be sure to not over-tighten the flange-nuts, as it will also warp & cause the same issue as you've discovered with the Amal.
" Or a more suitable third option? "
____ A 27mm-Amal (+/- 1mm) from most-any 4-stroke Brit.bike.
Duke-Cheers,
-Bob

Thanks!
Does Desmo Pro still sell the repair kit? Their online store just sells t-shirts.

" ---> Inside the rubber cable sleeve, there seems to be 2 wires coming out. One Grey and one white. "
____ Well that's VERY-odd ! _ As no Duke-model ever had a grey-colored alt.wire-lead, and also, all the battery-less models had THREE alt.wire-leads !
What does the white-wire connect to, the headlight or ign.coil ?
__ Can you post a picture that well-shows the tip-end of that alt.cable with it's two wire-lead's colors visibly-shown ?
If those wire-leads seem to be in fairly-good condition, then that would help confirm that the originals have been replaced (by someone not much caring to retain the stock-colors).
Hi Bob,
Here's a photo showing the 2 wires coming out of the stator.
What kind of generator is that?
