When the machine is ridden hard round a corner it requires banking over so that net force of gravity and centrifugal force is acting on a line that intersects the machines centre of gravity and the tyre contact patch. This is why you do not slide off the seat sideways as you would in a car or sidecar combination. You do not need to make any corrective push or pull through the feet or hands to stay seated.

The forces are balanced and you are in slightly higher pressure contact with the seat than when riding in a straight line. This is due to the added centrifugal force.

Similarly, the net force on the petrol in the float bowl is acting down relation to the machines 'vertical' centreline at all times when riding in a normal position. If you were to hang off in a 'dog hunting fire hydrant pose' it would vary slightly.

To prove this is so, you could set up a small plumb bob above your top triple clamp and see it stay perfectly aligned to the banking of the machine. It will not stay hanging vertical when you bank over through a corner.

Another way to demonstrate this difference in the physics of a car and Motorcycle going through a corner is to make up a hanger from string attached to the rim of a paper cup at 2 diametrically opposite points. Fill it with water and hang it from the car dashboard so that it cannot hit anything if it swings in any direction. Fill with water and brake hard, accelerate hard and corner hard. As long as it does not hit anything the water will not spill.

Cheers,

After using my 250 for years ,and suffering unreliable tickover with the 29 mmSSI and while in the IOM waiting for my son to work out where we were on his satnav, i noticed that a reliable tickover ( 2000 rpm!) could be had by just leaning the bike to the right. This was also very usefull while waiting forever on the start at Jurby while the van collected the detritus from previous sessions. Perhaps we need twin floats! ,its been done before.
